Virginia Beach is home to a mixture of races, religions and quality of life. Virginia Beach was originally habitated by the Nansemond Indians, but those numbers have dwindled significantly. Just under 77 percent of Virginians describe themselves as Caucasian and 15 percent are black. Asians and hispanics follow with other minorities making up the remaining population.

There are about 40 Baptist, seven Methodist and 10 Presbyterian churches in Virginia Beach. There are two Menonite and nine Catholic churches.

Virginia Beach also has a tradition of community service. About 10,000 volunteers contribute 1.5 million hours of service annually to the city.
